The Treaty of Rome

On 25 March 1957 Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany signed the Treaty of Rome thereby establishing the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. The treaty laid the foundation for further European integration. It was the visionary answer to the catastrophe of the Second World War. Sixty years later, at the backdrop of the challenges the EU is currently facing, we must ask ourselves what lessons can be learned from these early beginnings. This is what we should like to discuss with you only a few days after the heads of state celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

Crisis Talks by the Leibniz Research Alliance »Crises in a globalised world«

In the European Union crises have always been an important driver for change and progress. Crisis situations allow the heterogeneity of European politics to be transcended through a common perception of a situation as critical and urgent and, therefore, exemplify the need for cooperation. Is the historical experience still valid that crises lead to deeper integration? The lunch lecture series Crisis Talks, organized by the Leibniz Research Alliance Crises in a Globalized World, addresses how the European Union deals with crises and what we have learned from former crises situations.
