Conventional Arms Control in Europe - Pathways Towards the Future

Rüdiger Hartmann and Hans-Joachim Schmidt evaluate the merits of conventional arms control and discuss its future role

Has conventional arms control become obsolete after the end of the Cold War? Have economic interdependencies outstripped military restrictions and transparency measures?

In HSFK-Report No. 6/2011 Konventionelle Rüstungskontrolle in Europa – Wege in die Zukunft (Conventional Arms Control in Europe - Pathways Towards the Future), Rüdiger Hartmann and Hans-Joachim Schmidt doubt this assumption and show how conventional arms control can still support security cooperation in the future.

Former ambassador Dr Rüdiger Hartmann led the German Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) delegation from 1989 till 1993. From 1995 to 1999, he was commissioner of the Federal government for disarmament and arms control.
