CTBT in Danger?

In PRIF Report No. 77, Giorgio Franceschini and Annette Schaper analyze the current science programs of the leading nuclear weapon labs

In PRIF Report 77, „Nuclear Weapons Research and Modernization Without Nuclear Testing. The CTBT in danger?“ Giorgio Franceschini and Annette Schaper analyze the ambitious science programs on nuclear weapons, which were launched by the U.S., France and the United Kingdom after their CTBT signature a decade ago.

These programs aim at simulating nuclear warheads with high-power computers and costly experiments and are not uncontested: especially because they could allow modernizing current nuclear weapons, which would be irreconcilable with the spirit of the CTBT. In this light the current debates on new warheads and nuclear weapon modernization in the U.S., France and the United Kingdom must receive critical attention by the international arms control community as the norms of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation have already been under heavy strain over the last years.
