DVD: War in the Media

This multimedia-learning tool for schools and youth work is now available at the “Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung”

War movies, computer games, or news about current military conflicts – screen media coins our attitude towards and our imagination of war. Hereby the media are more than mere reporters. In democratic societies, it is only possible to conduct war if the public supports it – and this is impossible without the media. But at the same time, war is entertainment and playful fascination at the screen. Which forms of staging are used for that? What effects do presentations of war have in different screen media?

The DVD “Krieg in den Medien” (War in the Media) keeps track of these questions. It contains a large number of images, expert interviews, and, most importantly, interactive tasks which enable youth (age 12+) to study and develop their knowledge independently and in an attractive, gripping way. Attached to the DVD, teachers find a booklet that gives them a helping hand in didactical and technical issues.

Magdalena Kladzinski, Visiting Research Fellow at PRIF, and Prof. Dr Christian Büttner, (now retired) Project Director at PRIF, worked on idea and concept. In addition, they served as scientific counsellors of the project. The DVD has been realised in co-operation with the Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle Fernsehen (voluntary self-regulation of television) and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education).

The DVD costs 6,- euros and can be ordered at the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.
