International Conference “A Normative Order Beyond Geneva?”

On 10-11 October, PRIF hosts a conference on International Humanitarian Law in the context of changing patterns of conflict - please register before 2 October 2008

The international conference “A Normative Order Beyond Geneva?” will take place on 11-10 October 2008 at the Westend Campus of the Goethe-University, Frankfurt. It is conducted by PRIF in collaboration with Peace Studies Program of Cornell University and the Frankfurt Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders”. The confenrece begins at 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 10 October, and ends approx. 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, 11 October.

The conference centres around a “hot” issue on the border line between International Relations and International Law. Therefore we will bring together scholars from both fields of studies as well as practitioners in this area. We want to discuss whether, to what extent, and in which direction International Humanitarian Law as embodied in the Geneva regime is changing in the context of post-Cold War conflict and war. The aim of the conference is to identify present challenges to International Humanitarian Law in the context of changing patterns of conflict and to consider new normative approaches to deal with this issue in such a way that basic human rights can be protected effectively in conflict.

The conference is held in English.

Please register before 2 October 2008 via fax or email to schmidts @hsfk .de
