Jewish settlements on Palestinian territories

Standpunkt 12/2010 by Claudia Baumgart-Ochse on the handling of Jewish settlements in the Middle East peace process

Jewish settlements on Palestinian territories remain one of the most difficult impediments on the way to a solution of the Middle East conflict. So far all efforts and advances have failed in the long run.

In the latest issue of HSFK-Standpunkte (12/2010) "Abbau statt Baustopp. Vom Umgang mit den jüdischen Siedlungen im Nahost-Friedensprozess", Claudia Baumgart-Ochse explains why not the freeze of the settlements but their entire evacuation must be part of a bilateral agreement on the way to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. To achieve peace, allowances must be made towards and between the two parties. An appropriate compensation for the Jewish settlers is as important as support for a Palestinian state. Besides, both sides and the international community must be willing to sanction either party breaking the agreement. Furthermore, peace talks must be tied up to existing results if they are not to fall behind.
