Military Confidence Building and Arms Control

HSFK-Report No. 6/2009 by Hans-Joachim Schmidt on the "Military Confidence Building and Arms Control in Unresolved Territorial Conflicts" has been translated into English

Continuing territorial conflicts still represent a threat to regional peace and security in the Southwest of the Ukraine and Russia. The unsolved question of Abkhasia and South Ossetia led to a war in Georgia in Summer 2008. Armenia and Azerbaijan haven’t yet found a solution for the Nagorni Karabakh region and Moldova is still struggling with the question of the Transnistrian autonomy. How can those security risks be encountered?

In the PRIF Report Military Confidence Building and Arms Control in Unresolved Territorial ConflictsHans-Joachim Schmidt explores options for military confidence building and arms control to lower the possibility of violent escalation. Political solutions of the conflicts are not in sight and sub-regional arms control approaches are refused by important actors. So well adapted confidence building and arms control measures can be used within existing arms control regimes to reduce the likelihood of war.
