Nuclear Disarmament – Options for the next review cycle of the NPT

Harald Müller presents his concept of nuclear disarmament in the latest HSFK-Report

If and only if nuclear weapon states take their obligations concerning nuclear disarmament seriously, the stability of the nonproliferation regime can be ensured in the long run. But the different disarmament rationales of the nuclear weapons states and particularly the non-aligned states are diametrically opposed.

In HSFK Report No. 7/2011 Nukleare Abrüstung – Optionen für den kommenden Überprüfungszyklus des NVV (Nuclear Disarmament - Options for the next review cycle of the NPT), Harald Müller shows how the disarmament process can still be brought forward. It is necessary to address the task from different perspectives to reconcile the various self images, perceptions, and security strategies. Müller proposes specific disarmament steps which can be realized in the foreseeable future and highlights Germany’s role and tasks in the process.
