The editors consider causes and discuss consequences. The state of the European peace project after three years of economic and financial crisis is at the heart of our report.
Integration has long been considered the political achievement in a Europe that had for centuries been so prone to violent conflict. Is that no longer the case? The authors discuss the gaps in the European project and its future prospects.
Globalization and migration challenge European societies, which are constituted as nationstates. Can they cope with the new realities? Europe advertises the spirit of its diversity as the core of its identity. This vision is at stake with respect to its neighbours both in the East and in the South. How can a Europe of anxieties and egoisms, which already seems to be developing, be prevented?
The editors also take stock of the military interventions in Afghanistan and in other armed conflicts and humanitarian catastrophes and examine arms trends, opportunities for disarmament, NATO’s new strategies and the reform of the German Armed Forces.
The Peace Report is a joint project of the five peace research institutes of Germany. It has been published since 1987. Researchers of different disciplines analyse international conflicts from a peace strategic perspective. The editors base their statements on these analyses and formulate recommendations for the peace and security policy of Germany and Europe.
