Post-war orders in Southeast Europe by Comparison

The latest HSFK-Report 4/2014 examines the factors that may promote or threaten chances for a lasting peace after a civil war.

Between 1990 and 2009 almost 50 civil wars ended worldwide. But in almost 3/4 of the cases, more armed conflicts and wars followed. However, the post-civil war orders in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo have remained stable. Thorsten Gromestakes stock of these Southeast European cases and examines the factors that promoted or threatend a lasting peace.

In HSFK-Report 4/2014 "Die Nachkriegsordnungen in Südosteuropa im regionalen und weltweiten Vergleich" (The post-civil war ordersin Southeast Europe in a regional and world-wide comparison), Thorsten Gromes identifies the context conditions and compares them to quantitative case studies of post-civil war societies after World War II. These comparisons provide indications for which kind of interventions by the international community may be reasonable in civil wars.
