Democracy promotion intends to correspond to the norms and interests of Western democracies. However, these states are facing serious conflicts of aims: On the one hand they wish to promote liberal democratic values and procedures, on the other they pursue their own economic and security interests.
The book "The Comparative International Politics of Democracy Promotion", edited by Jonas Wolff, Hans-Joachim Spanger and Hans-Jürgen Puhle asks - from a theoretical and comparative perspective - how states tackle these conflicting aims. The volume also examines which motives drive democracy promoters and it asks for the determinants of democracy promotion. Six case studies examine the USA's and Germany's democracy promotion politics towards Bolivia, Ecuador, Turkey, Pakistan, Belarus and Russia.
