Ukraine, Russia and the European security order

The latest HSFK-Report 3/2014 recommends a new strategy of enclosure of Western politics towards Russia

Already in 2008, after the war against Georgia, Matthias Dembinski, Hans-Joachim Schmidt and Hans-Joachim Spanger argued in favor of a "strategy of involvement instead of containment" towards Moscow to shape Europe's security with promote Russia's rapprochement to the West.

In Ukraine and with the annexion of Crimea, Moscow, however, recently demonstrates that it no longer feels obliged to the international order and follows a policy that has revisionist implications.

What does Putin want to achieve? Is this a single case or an original precedent? Shall the former great power even be re-established? In any case, the current Russian change of course demands an answer.

In HSFK-Report 3/2014 "Einhegung: Die Ukraine, Russland und die europäische Sicherheitsordnung", the authors therefore recommend a new "strategy of enclosure" of Western politics towards Russia.
