The new PRIF Working Paper “Understanding Societal Perspectives on African Interventions. A Methodological Agenda” by Antonia Witt discusses methodological approaches for studying societal perspectives on African regional interventions. The paper analyzes strengths and weaknesses of media analysis, survey research and focus group/interview research in order to demonstrate the feasibility and added value of investigating societal perspectives – an aspect that has been largely ignored in research to date. It also shows that the choice of method is not exclusively a question of the resources and skills available, but that it has a decisive influence on what kind of society and what societal perspectives are made visible.
