Extreme Society: Radicalization and Deradicalization in Germany

Extreme political views are experiencing an upward trend. Positions on the right and on the left side of the political spectrum as well as in the context of religious sectarianism positions have become increasingly radicalized also in Germany. In order to prevent the development towards a “Society of Extremes” and strengthen liberal values and institutions, mechanisms of individual and collective radicalization patterns have to be assessed. Beside the prevention and the prosecution of criminal offenses, incentives for exiting from extremist groups have to be taken. In this context, the project called „Extreme Society. Radicalization and Deradicalization in Germany” which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) started its work on July 1, 2017.

The project will systematically compare and assess the state of radicalization research and will offer options for action and for strengthening democratic values. Under the lead of Prof. Christopher Daase, Prof. Nicole Deitelhoff and Dr Julian Junk, the PRIF team, including Magdalena von Drachenfels, Dr Eva Herschinger, Heribert Meiss, Philipp Offermann und Dr Carmen Wunderlich will coordinate the project and perform a knowledge transfer.

The project has been set up for 18 months and is carried out in collaboration with four research institutes and partners from the practical sphere who will survey the following key topics: Processes of radicalization on an individual scale will be addressed by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) at Bielefeld University while the Berlin Institute for Integration- and Migration Research (BIM) at Humboldt-University will deal with the radicalization of groups. In what sense even societies can radicalize will be assessed by the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), while the Violence Prevention Network will take care of the practical challenges of deradicalization. The International Center for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King's College in London puts a focus on online-radicalization and the National Center for Crime Prevention (NCCP) will survey the issue of evaluation with regards to prevention and deradicalization measures.

All essential results will be made available to the public in different online and offline formats. Moreover, they will be presented in a closing conference in Berlin which will be conducted along with the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF).
