From 5 to 7 October, the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) organized a workshop together with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Accra, Ghana, and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The international workshop was titled “The Role of Coercion in Peacebuilding: Insights from Africa in an Interregional Perspective” and it was held at the KAIPTC. For two-and-a half days, 33 researchers from Africa, Europe and other regions of the world engaged in an exchange on different theoretical and methodological approaches to the conceptualization of coercion in peacebuilding and discussed the role of regional organizations and non-traditional (state as well as non-state) actors as well as their approaches in peace operations. Furthermore, the workshop benefitted from rich empirical case studies, which shed light on different forms of coercion present in peace operations in the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, and Kenya. The organizers would like to thank all participants for their attendance, their insightful contributions, and the inspiring discussions. The event is part of PRIF’s project “Coercion in Peacebuilding” and was funded by the Fondation Avec et pour Autres.
