“I know no peace which has grown out of war. There is no peace that can be achieved by violence.” E. O. Czempiel

February 20, 2017 - We mourn for Ernst-Otto Czempiel. With his demise PRIF loses his founding father and longstanding spiritus rector. He was the doyen of German peace research and will be painfully missed by political science.

Although Ernst-Otto Czempiel retired years ago in 2008 due to health issues, his death leaves a major void. He was an inspiring, trenchantly thinking and politically engaged discussant partner for all of us, for many a responsible doctoral supervisor and for some a wonderful friend. He shaped academic debates far beyond the borders of peace research and became an intellectual reference point for politics and society.

Ernst-Otto Czempiel died on 11th February shortly before his 90th birthday in Berlin. We will miss his quiet but constantly heard voice a lot.
