The precarious future of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

The latest HSFK-Report shows the recent debates on nuclear weapons after the Review Conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York, which is regarded as failed

The 9th Review Conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which took place in May 2015 in New York is considered a failure. The controverse about a nuclear-weapons free zone in the middle east prevented a joint agreement. Just the humanitarian initiative (HI), lead on by Austria, provided new ideas and found many followers, claiming a complete abolition of nuclear weapons. What kind of consequences would a contract like this have for the NPT?

Harald Müller shows in HSFK Report 01/2015 "Die gespaltene Gemeinschaft. Zur gescheiterten Überprüfung des Nuklearen Nichtverbreitungsvertrags" the positioning of the members of the conference, judges the HI and offers recommendations for the German Government, how to get constructional engaged in this debate.
