As part of the joint project “Coercion in Peacebuilding”, the partner institutions Kofi Annan Peace-keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) and PRIF are hosting an international authors’ workshop in Accra, Ghana, from November 15 to 17, 2023. With this second international workshop, PRIF continues its cooperation with KAIPTC and IPSS to develop a jointly edited volume on the role of coercion in peacebuilding. Antonia Witt, Sophia Birchinger and Julia Sigrid Radke are taking part for PRIF.

This workshop in November 2023 follows up on the initial meeting last year that kick-started the exchange of insights into the role coercive means play in peacebuilding. The 2023 workshop will discuss first chapter drafts for an edited volume on the role of coercion in peacebuilding. Around 20 international researchers are invited to share and discuss their contribution to a theoretical and empirical debate on what role coercion plays in the way regional and “new actors” approach peacebuilding.

The 2.5-day program is organized into thematic panels, allowing for in-depth discussions on various research perspectives and ideas. The first section will bring together scholars who employ diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to conceptualize coercion in peacebuilding. The second section will explore coercion in peacebuilding from the perspective of African regional organizations. The third section will shed light on the role of "new actors" in peacebuilding, including rising powers. The workshop will conclude with a session encouraging critical and reflective thoughts, prompting us to rethink coercion in the context of peacebuilding. After the workshop, the partners will develop a workshop report on the main outcomes of the gathering. The report from the previous workshop in 2022 is in PDF format available.

This workshop is made possible by generous funding from the Fondation Avec et Pour Autres.
