A new Diaspora? Reconfigurations of political positioning of Turkish institutions and Turkish people in Germany

The PhD Project takes a look at the institutional forms and imaginary concepts that are used by the Turkish government on one side and people of Turkish origin on the other side to justify and position their political activities in Germany. In this context it is conspicuous that the concept of “diaspora” has become prominent to address a group of population that was previously conceived as “Gastarbeiter” (migrant worker), “Auslandstürken” (oversea Turks) or “Deutschtürken” (German Turks) and their “Migrantenorganisationen” (migrant organizations).

The project examines the (different or similar) objectives of selected organizations and their political actors. Additionally, it explores their plausibility for the addressed Turks living in heterogeneous social and political spaces in Germany: What roles do those organizations that subscribe to the Turkish diaspora politics play for their clientele’s development of political subjectivities?
