Corporations and Natural Resource Governance

In countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Columbia and Indonesia, it has become apparent that natural resource wealth does not automatically translate into economic or societal welfare. On the contrary, the exploitation of natural resources appears to have a negative effect on socio-economic and political development and, moreover, often correlates to the outbreak and escalation of violent conflict.

The ambivalent role of translational corporations in resource conflicts

The project “Corporations and Natural Resource Governance” investigated the ambivalent role of translational corporations in resource conflicts on the global, national and local levels. Corporations participate in the exploitation of natural resources and, at the same time, assume the role of consumers and sellers of these resources on global markets. More recently, such corporations have also increasingly assumed direct involvement in initiatives related to natural resource governance.

Conflicts over natural resources touch on diverse dimensions of justice. They may be conflicts related to the distribution of material goods, as in the case of land and property rights or the distribution of income from resource extraction. They may also assume the form of conflicts over procedural conceptions of justice, such as in the case of the recognition and representation of certain local communities that consider themselves insufficiently involved in decision-making processes. Or for cases in which resource exploitation is deemed to be another aspect of cultural dominance and non-recognition.
