A new research group headed by Dr Priska Daphi was formed in the research department “Transnational Actors”. The group explores the role of social movements and civil society in intra-societal conflicts in the context of globalization and migration.

The project “Welcome or insulted?” examines why local reactions to new accommodations for refugees vary significantly across Germany. In a comparative study, the project seeks to determine the factors that shape opposition and support.

The second project “Protest and Memory” analyzes how present-day protests in Germany relate to the ‘68 movement in East and West Germany. How do they remember this time and how far does this differ from public memories? The research project forms part of the international project LIVINGMEMORIES, a project funded by EU’s 7th Framework Programme, which explores memory building related with conflicts and protest movements in six countries.
