Guest researcher: Professor Clifford Bob from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA

Scientific exchange within the framework of the project “Contested World Orders”

Clifford Bob, professor of Political Science and Endowed Chair in International Relations at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, is a guest researcher at PRIF this July. His stay is within the context of the project “Contested World Orders”, a joint project of German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg, the Social Science Centre in Berlin (WZB) and PRIF. In relation to the project, Prof Bob will be giving a speech at the GIGA workshop in Hamburg from July 13th until 14th about “Rights as Weapons of Political Conflict”.

 

Prof Bob has a wide range of publications including non-state actors, human rights and normative development. His book “The Marketing of Rebellion: Insurgents, Media, and International Activism” (Cambridge University Press, 2005), was named the “Top Book of 2006” by the magazin “The Globalist”. In 2012 he published “The Global Right Wing and the Clash of World Politics” (Cambridge University Press).

 

During his stay at PRIF he will be working in collaboration with the project “Religious NGOs in the UN” in Research Department “Private Actors in the Transnational Sphere”, commenting on the recent research results and discussing opportunities for future cooperation. Furthermore, Prof Bob will be working on two of his own new projects, a book entitled “Rights as Weapons in Political Conflict“ and an article focusing on normative conflict about targeted killing.
