Lively exchange between science and politics

Hessian Minister for Education and Research visits PRIF to learn about the project “Salafism in Germany”

On 21st January 2016  Boris Rhein, Hessian Minister of Education, Research and the Arts, paid a visit at PRIF to get informed about PRIF’s research project “Salafism in Germany: State of the Art and Knowledge Transfer”, lead by Harald Müller and Christopher Daase. The research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project team, including over 20 scientists from different disciplines such as politics, Islamic sciences, ethnology plus practitioners from authorities and civil society contributes not only to a better understanding of salafism and jihadism in Germany but also to the development of instruments for political consulting. The interdisciplinary project aims to collect relevant practical experience, out of many different perspectives.

The researcher identify the scientific state in the issue areas data situation and accessibility, the forms of organization and recruitment, the motivation and careers of salafi-jihadists, (conflicting) justification narratives of salafi-jihadism, transnational dimensions of salafist networks as well as lessons learned from prevention and de-radicalization initiatives. The results of the project are ultimately meant to offer options of action in day-to-day practice.

In March first results of the project will be published in six HSFK-Reports. In autumn an anthology of the results will follow.
