Press Conference with Laureate of the Hessian Peace Prize at PRIF

Kenyan peace activist Dekha Ibrahim Abdi answers media questions on 20 January at 3 p.m.

Ms. Dekha Ibrahim Abdi, who will be honoured with the Hessian Peace Prize 2009 Thursday of next week, will give, jointly with PRIF, a press conference on the day before the ceremony. We cordially invite members of the media on 20 January 2010 on 3 p.m. into PRIF’s premises.

The Kenyan Peace Actitivist Dekha Ibrahim Abdi, born 1964 in Wajir, has developed a very successful method of conflict mediation based on inter-religious co-operation. Initially, she applied it in facilitating between Christians and Muslims in her home community and later nationwide. Meanwhile, she also adapted it to many conflict parties in numerous countries worldwide, among them Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan und South Africa. In addition, Ms. Abdi educated peace workers in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Canada, Cambodia, the Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Zimbabwe und Great Britain.

 

Ms. Abdi will be the first woman from sub-Saharan Africa and the second person of Muslim faith awarded with the Hessian Peace Prize of the Albert-Osswald-Foundation.

 

Since 1994, the Hessian Peace Prize is annually awarded to persons with outstanding accomplishments in international mutual understanding and peace. The prize comes with an endowment of 25,000 Euros. The Hessian Peace Prize 2009 ceremony will take place on 21 January 2010 at the parliament of Hesse in Wiesbaden (with invited guests only).
